Bill Neafsey

The Out To Lunch Bunch

Glenn Davis/
Tony D’Addario

To celebrate Beth Neafsey’s Big 7-0, the Neafsey family cruised aboard the Disney Dream, the Mouse Empire’s newest ship. On its four-day trip, the Dream stopped at Nassau and Disney’s own island, Castaway Cay. From left on the back row: Bill, Sr., Lisa, Bill Jr., and Beth. Molly, age 4, and Brendan, age 6, complete the picture.

Difficult to believe that anyone in this active, robust group is 70! Although this is the year we “hit the wall,” Charley Cameron, Bill Neafsey, Steve Smith and Jack Matthews keep on swinging.  They participated in the Class of ‘59 golf outing in June at the Roselle Golf Club. “We lost track of the numbers somewhere around the 16th hole,” said Bill.

Al Reinoso

Al and his wife Tessa have homes in Asbury Park and Barcelona, Spain. Tessa took these photos during Holy Week in Barcelona; the hooded person is a penitent, said Al. Al wanted all 59ers to know that if they visit Barcelona, “it would be my pleasure to assist you in enjoying the great experiences that this wonderful city has to offer.” In general, he and Tessa winter there and summer in Asbury Park, but new grandchildren and other obligations have a way of upsetting plans. Al’s phone number in N.J. is 732-361-6493. To call him in Barcelona from the USA, it’s 011-34-93-218-4024.  He and Tessa live in a Barcelona area equivalent of SoHo—artsy and off beat.

Steve and Mary Ann ventured to  Egypt and the Sultanate of Oman from November 27 to December 12 last year. That was “before the sand hit the fan,” said Steve, i.e. the overthrow of President Mubarak. While in Oman, the Smiths stayed with U.S. Ambassador Rich Schmierer and his wife. Included in their visit with the Schmierers were the souks (local markets) and a few embassy parties and a charity ball.  While aboard this camel, Steve said he could hear the poor animal moaning.

Steve Smith

59ers gathered at Harrigan’s Pub in Sea Girt on August 31. From lower left: John Pierce (who is now officially 70) Jack Matthews, Steve Smith, Bob Coogan (who recently retired as a Monmouth County judge), Walt Carroll, Ed Gilhooley, Bill Neafsey, Jack McGraw and Joe Doyle.

Our long lost classmate Glenn Davis was in the states during the week of September 4th to accompany and enroll his daughter Candy at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, Iowa. Glenn has been a missionary in Colombia (Santa Marta) for the past 18 years. He and his wife, Patty of 13 years are living on the North coast of Colombia where they founded a Christian church 6 and a half years ago. He serves with the Christian Missions in Many Lands evangelistic association.

Glenn retired from the Navy in the late 70’s. During his stay in the states he had the opportunity to visit Tony in San Diego. During their visit, they shared

stories (scuttlebutt) of their Navy careers and the many memories of their days and friendships at the Hive. Needless to say, they had many laughs.

For those interested in reestablishing communication with Glenn, he may be contacted at: [glenndavis1941@gmail.com].

Bob  Stefans

In October, Bob and wife Lyn, vacationed in Maine. They boarded the ship, Island Romance at Portland, Maine and visited the small islands in Casco Bay. “We have spent a week in Maine during October for the past 20 plus years. We go the week before the hotels and the lobster restaurants shut down for the season,” said Bob.

The Casco Bay Islands primarily contain vacation homes including rentals. About 10% of the homes are inhabited year-round. All travel and deliveries to the islands are by water; no bridges connect the islands to the mainland.

Bob and Lyn live in Sugar Land, Texas, a community southwest of Houston. As you can tell from Bob’s jacket, he is a fan of the Houston Texans.  The Stefans plan to visit their daughter and her husband in Toronto over the Christmas holidays.

The Class of 1959

The Class of 1960 holds the record for the largest single contribution at a 50th class reunion.  The Class of 1959 is second. To encourage alumni to contribute to the annual fund, the Class of 1960 instituted a new award, the Class of 1960 Award. Each year starting in 2011, the award will be given to the class that contributes the largest sum to the Annual Fund in the past year. For 2011, that was the Class of 1959. Jim Del Mauro and Jack Matthews were at the Hive for the Class Agents Meeting on October 25 and accepted the award for the class.

Tuesday October 25 at the Hive: From left, Paul Thornton, ‘63; Jim Del Mauro, ‘59; Jack Matthews, ‘59; Fr, Albert Holtz, OSB, ‘60.

Quentin Hippert

Quentin is the grandson of Donna and Pete Prunkl. Quentin’s mother emailed Pete with an urgent Halloween message: Quentin thought that the necktie she had picked out for his Harry Potter costume looked “too much like Hufflepuff and not like Gryffindor.” Pete’s solution: his St. Benedict’s neck tie from a few reunions back. It was perfect! Quentin is wearing it in the photo on the right. He won a prize for most original costume at our neighborhood Halloween party. Thanks, SBP.
